Originally released in 2013 under the name Dattch (meaning date catch), this dating app was re-branded to HER in 2015. HER claims to be the most popular lesbian dating app, and sets itself apart from others by being an app made for queer women by queer women.
HER has a more open approach, with the long-term goal of connecting queer women to their community rather than being a simple hookup app. It currently boasts over a million members in the US.
Your Facebook/Instagram name is automatically your HER username
They grab your Facebook or Instagram photos onto the app (can be edited later)
Sign-up in less than a minute
No account verification process
HER only lets users sign up through their Facebook or Instagram accounts. They do this to verify the authenticity of those registering. This has raised protests before because they would mistakenly reject "masculine-looking" women (since men are not allowed to make profiles in the app). Once your account is connected, HER automatically grabs your profile photo, name, and birthday to build your HER profile.
8 photos are the optimum number of uploads (according to their stats)
You can view other members' friends list
Profiles are only on their first names
Shows their distance from current your location
Profile details include your name, age, height, sexuality, gender identity, relationship status, photos, text items, and friends list. You can set your gender as female, non-binary, agender, FTM, gender fluid, intersex, two-spirit, and so many more. Your friends list is public to everyone. HER suggest uploading 8 photos for others to get to know you. Any less is insufficient and any more might be overbearing.
You can view the photos and names of the people who liked you, but you can't see their profile. Only premium members can do it. Messaging is unlimited for free members, but messages can only be sent to friends and mutual matches. The free search feature is unavailable, and you can only see other profiles that are matched to you.
HER created some special features exclusively curated for lesbians to meet and interact.
Meet is the main feature of the entire app. Here you are presented with different profiles who meet your age and distance preference. You can swipe to either like or dismiss them. Once you mutually like each other or are friends, you can message each other.
The feed is a feature that lets you interact with members real-time without needing to be matches or friends. You can like or comment on posts, and you can add your own image or text post. Being active on this feature exposes you to more people and increases your visibility.
Events can be viewed and posted in the Feed. The best lesbian events in your area are posted here: from music festivals to cookouts to concerts to comedy shows. Attending these events will let you meet and socialize with lesbians.
"The app isn't the best when it comes to the dating part. The profiles are either too insubstantial, or some of the girls I talk to end up ghosting me. There's just not a lot do unless you upgrade to premium. However, I loved using this app to see which events will be attended by a big number of lesbians, since my gaydar in public isn't always the best. I've met a lot of great girls through that alone, and some of them I ended up going on dates with." - Female Barista (24)

If you cancel your premium subscription, you can still use the benefits of the membership until the end of the period. But you won't be refunded for the remaining days. When it's due to renew, your premium membership will be inactive and you won't be billed again. You can only ask for a refund within a month of a transaction.
Uninstalling the app or deleting your profile doesn't automatically cancel your subscription.
LGBTQ online dating can be intimidating in a straight-oriented industry, and HER has achieved its goal of solving just that. HER isn't originally a gay dating app just translated for lesbians, but an app with only queer women in mind from the very start. However, its re-branding from Dattch to HER in 2015 changed its system from 'lesbian dating app' to 'lesbian social app'. Yes, you will find women here, but you'll never know if they want to date or something more platonic. If you want other sites and apps that are more straightforward about dating, check our Matchmaking service category.
